Ninety percent of roadbed construction completed at Khabarovsk Bypass highway

The construction of the roadbed of the first highway in the Russian Far East is 90% complete. This is the largest phase of construction and installation work in the erection of the 27-kilometer highway. Construction is carried out around the clock, it continues through weekends and holidays, with regard for the anti-epidemic measures.

Over 10,000 cubic meters of soil are delivered to the construction site daily. A total of over 7 million cubic meters have been delivered to date. Additional equipment was purchased to extract rock at local quarries and complex logistics problems were solved, because not a single quarry within a radius of 50 kilometers was able to provide the required amount of material.

The construction of artificial structures continues simultaneously with the construction of the roadbed. Spans were mounted on 20 of the 24 bridges and overpasses, including the largest bridge over the Chernaya River. This is one of the most complicated bridges in the project in terms of engineering: the riverbed was reinforced and improved to conduct work, piles up to 27 meters deep with sheet piling were set up to ensure the safety of the bridge even during floods. In the coming months, a bridge also slated to be built over the Polezhaevka River near Matveevsky highway.

Since the beginning of 2020, work has been ongoing on the construction of collection points and office buildings, and finishing work is being conducted in the technological tunnels. Underground work on utilities continues: cable communication lines for the traffic control system are being laid out, 85% of the power supply cable installation has been completed, 16 of 19 transformer substations have already been installed. The facility’s power system will be tested in the Q3 2020.

The 15-year concession agreement for the creation of the Khabarovsk Bypass was signed in December 2016, entailing the highway’s construction and subsequent operation. The project concessionaire is the Regional Concession Company (part of the VIS Group), the concession grantor is the Government of the Khabarovsk Territory represented by the Ministry of Economic Development. The general contractor is the parent company of the construction subholding of the Group - Production Company VIS.

The new highway is being built with federal support, and more than 25% of the cost of capital costs is made up of the investor's own and borrowed funds, the VIS Group. Gazprombank is the financial partner.

Khabarovsk Bypass is a road of strategic importance, as it connects three federal highways: Ussuri, Amur and Vostok. It will allow to decrease the burden on the road network of the regional capital by 18% by moving the transit traffic flows out of the city. This will also contribute to improving road safety and reducing the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere.
