The cable-stayed bridge pylon in Novosibirsk has reached 112 meters and is 98% ready

VIS Group is completing one of the key stages of the concession project to create a bridge across the Ob River in Novosibirsk, namely, pylon construction. 28 out of 29 grips of the right and left posts were concreted, which equates 112 out of 114 meters. The remaining two meters will be built up by the end of March.

The monolithic H-shaped pylon is the largest structure of the bridge crossing and one of the highest in the capital of Siberia. A cable-stayed system will be mounted on it, which, using 70 steel cables, will hold the 380-meter bridge span with a total weight of over 5,500 tons. This design solution allowed to avoid the installation of volumetric bridge supports on the river bank and preserve the Gorodskoye Nachalo park. In addition, the infrastructure facility has become the new city landmark and one of its architectural dominants.

To date, work is underway to equip the pylon for the installation of a cable-stayed system, which will begin in April and continue until fall 2023. “This is a technologically complex and vital part of the work that will be carried out with the involvement of a specialized Russian organization certified by the cable manufacturer - the French company Freyssinet,” said Vladislav Vavilin, Deputy CEO of VIS Production Company. “For this purpose, a large amount of preparatory work is currently being carried out on the pylon racks for the installation of mounting structures in the spots where the cable-stayed nodes are attached.”

Meanwhile, the assembly of the cable-stayed bridge section is being completed on the right bank. Almost 5,000 tons of special auxiliary structures and more than 3,600 tons of metal superstructure parts have already been installed over Budagov Square. Backfilling of the subgrade of the right-bank transport interchange is 78% complete. Here, 9 out of 10,500 m2 of road pavement have been laid, and the builders have begun installing the road fence.

Large-scale work has also been launched at the left-bank road junction. This is a unique infrastructure facility with 25 ramps on several levels. Construction is being carried out in stages: at the moment, 6 exits and a main passage overpass are being built simultaneously. The main focus of the work is focused on the rhythmic construction of supports and retaining walls, enlargement and installation of metal structures. To date, 6,800 tons of metal totaling almost 2 linear km have been installed in the spans of future highways. A monolithic roadway slab on the main passage roadway has been concreted by 52%, the builders are laying pavement - these works have been completed by 30%.

The total length of the road infrastructure being created is over 5 kilometers, 3.5 of which are automobile approaches to the bridge with transport interchange complexes. Their construction became possible thanks to the concession format and the engagement of extrabudgetary funds in the project. The creation of a high-speed chord connecting the parts of Novosibirsk separated by the river will significantly relieve traffic on existing bridges. By 2025 the new highway is expected to allow up to 60,000 vehicles per day to pass through. VIS Group is the project’s concessionaire and investor, and the financial partner is Gazprombank.
