The main construction cycle of the Lena Bridge launched in Yakutia

On October 17, the ceremony of pouring the first bored pile for the support of the Lena Bridge was held at the left-bank technological site on the Lena River. The start of the main cycle of construction was announced by the Head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Aisen Nikolaev. The bridge crossing project is being implemented under a concession agreement between the Government of Yakutia and VIS Group; the concession’s financial partner is SBER.

Before the builders began pouring concrete into the first pile, the Minister of Transport and Road Facilities of the Republic Vladimir Sivtsev and the director of VIS Group’s construction project Anton Krupnov spoke about the work already completed and plans for the rest of the year.

“Today, construction and installation work is being carried out simultaneously on both river banks. These works include the construction of technological sites with access roads, the construction of a working bridge across the Tabaginskaya channel, and the installation of a concrete plant. The builders have completed a lot of preliminary work, and today we are ready to begin construction of the main structures of the bridge. The builders plan to complete the bulk of the preparatory work before the onset of cold weather, so that construction can begin at full capacity next spring. I will add that this year up to 50 bored piles with a diameter of 1.5 m are slated for installation under the overpass of the left-bank part of the bridge,” reported Vladimir Sivtsev, Minister of Transport and Road Facilities of Yakutia.

Taking into account the region’s climate and geology, the Giprostroymost Institute engineers have developed a unique design for the cable-stayed bridge. It will be supported by 3 pylons with a height ranging from 194.5 to 284.5 meters. The length of the bridge will be 4.6 km, and the total length of the road with two approaches is 14.5 km.

“We have witnessed a historic event - the construction of a bridge across the Lena River has begun. Thanks to the support of Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, the age-old dream of many generations of Yakuts is coming true before our eyes. I am confident that the bridge builders, our partners - the VIS Group and SBER, will make every effort to ensure the commissioning of the facility within the deadline set by the President of Russia - by the end of 2028. Our country’s top engineering institutes worked on the project. It is unique since similar bridges have never been built in permafrost conditions before. I am convinced that the solutions that served as its foundation will serve future generations for many years and give a powerful impetus to subsequent accelerated development of not only Yakutia, but also the country’s entire North-East," Aisen Nikolaev emphasized.

The automobile bridge crossing will comprise two lanes and have an estimated capacity of 5,300 cars per day. This large-scale engineering structure is to be built in the shortest possible time - by the end of 2028 - on the instructions of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin.

“Today is a historic day not only for Yakutia, but also for VIS Group. We are starting something that no one in the world has ever done before. I am sure that the progress of construction will be observed with interest not only in the Russian Far East, but also throughout Russia and friendly countries,” noted Sergey Romashkov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of VIS Group, in his speech at the ceremony. “As the investor and concessionaire of the project, we are aware of the high responsibility, complexity and tight construction deadlines. Therefore, all of of VIS Group’s available competencies and resources will be engaged in this project. Work in the riverbed will begin this summer.”

Sergey Yudin, CEO of VIS Group, reported on the readiness of the builders to begin work and asked Aisen Nikolaev to start pouring concrete into the bored pile of the first bridge support. “There is difficult, but very interesting and important work ahead of us. The builders are ready to do everything in their power to successfully implement this truly historic project,” Sergey Yudin summed up.

In total, the project provides for 26 supports: three in the riverbed section, the rest – on the automobile approaches on both banks of the river. The number of bored piles for the supports varies between 18 and 32 pieces in the land section and between 102 and 208 in the riverbed section. The length of the piles will range from 10 to 40 meters, their diameter is 1.5 meters. The largest bridge support is to be built for the central pylon. Its construction will require 208 piles and more than 10,000 m3 of concrete.

The bridge concession in Yakutia will contribute significantly to the development of the Russian construction industry - no one in the world has ever built such cable-stayed bridges in the Arctic zone with permafrost. This is one of the most important transport projects in the country’s history, implemented on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin and included in the National Program for the Development of the Russian Far East. The Lena Bridge will connect the Trans-Siberian and Baikal-Amur Mainlines with the Northern Sea Route. It will connect the federal Lena and Kolyma highways with the Vilyuy highway, that is, in fact, the Eastern part of Russia with the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk.

For the residents of the largest region of our country, the construction of the Lena Bridge will become a new stage of socio-economic development: for the first time in history, a year-round connection will be created between the regional capital and a large part of the territory cut off by the river, from where most of the cargo is delivered. The transport and logistics hub being created will connect air, rail, road and river transport and create a framework for the development of a backbone transport network in the Russian Far East.
