Painting the 114-meter pylon of the bridge under construction in Novosibirsk will require 9 tons of special paint

One of the tallest structures in the capital of Siberia, the H-shaped 114-meter pylon of the bridge across the Ob River, has begun to assumed a finished form. As a result of ongoing multi-layer painting, it will become pearly white. The almost-10,000 m2 area to be painted will require 9 tons of paint, which were delivered to the construction site. The work is being carried out by 8 industrial climbers and painters from a specialized Novosibirsk company.

To date, finishing painting has been completed on an area of over 2,000 m2. When painting pylon structures, a comprehensive three-layer anti-corrosion protection system is used. The task of the first, primer layer is to ensure high adhesion (sticking) of the next layer of coating and to even out the color of the final painted surface. The second layer creates the thickness of a complex coating to ensure the protection of the reinforced concrete surface of the structure from various impact factors. The top coat creates the final color and protects previous layers from UV damage.

The airless painting method used allows for a soft and uniform coating. The work is carried out using special stations that create high pressure and distribute the flow. The entire surface to be painted is covered with a protective canopy to prevent paint from entering the environment and covering nearby objects.

“The painting technology is quite complex, and it is crucial to follow it precisely. Each layer has two components: enamel and hardener. The complete reaction between them takes 25-30 minutes. If you don’t have time to apply the enamel during this time, the paint turns into fine dust and stops sticking to the surface,” said Vladislav Vavilin, project director of VIS Group. “The areas to be painted are covered with thick fabric, the fastening of which requires separate calculations, since its area is comparable to that of the sails of fairly large sailboats.”

The technical readiness of the bridge crossing is currently estimated at 90%. Work on the installation of metal and steel-reinforced concrete spans on the supporting parts has been fully completed, the installation of parapet fencing blocks has almost been finished, and the construction of road pavement continues. VIS Group engaged about 1,400 people and 200 units of special equipment in the construction of concession facilities.

The bridge crossing over the Ob River in Novosibirsk is one of the largest projects in the transport sector of Russia. It is implemented in a concession format, where financing comes from both federal and regional budgets, as well as investments from VIS Group. The concession agreement is valid until 2042. After construction is completed, the concessionaire will carry out technical and commercial operation of the bridge crossing, which, together with approaches and transport interchanges on both banks, spans over 5 kilometers.
