Speed limit on Khabarovsk Bypass is slated to be raised

On July 15, 2022, traffic was launched along the Khabarovsk Bypass, the first expressway in the Russian Far East. During the year, 2.5 million cars drove along the highway. Now, on average, about 6,500 motorists use the new transport infrastructure daily.

The road bypassing the regional capital was built by VIS Group under a concession agreement with the Government of the Khabarovsk Territory using private investments. The operation of Khabarovsk Bypass until 2031 is carried out by VIS Group, Transtoll is the commercial operator on its behalf.

Currently, the issue of increasing the maximum allowed speed on the highway is being resolved. The technical parameters and the quality of the roadway meet all the requirements for high-speed routes. In case of a positive decision, the speed limit will be increased from the current 90 to 110 km per hour.

“In order to increase the permitted speed threshold, the required changes are being made to the traffic organization project, which must be approved by the traffic police. We only need to replace the signs, most of them are electronic boards. All other parameters for the speed mode were originally provided for by the project. We hope that by the fall, motorists will be able to fully assess the quality of the roadway,” said Sergey Yudin, First Deputy CEO of VIS Group.

The issue of introducing a transponder-based fare payment system is also under consideration. The Khabarovsk Bypass will be integrated in Russia’s unified toll road system, which will make it possible to pay for travel using the same transponders as on the M-11 Neva, M-4 Don, Central Ring Road and others.

The 27.1 km-long road passes through five interchanges, 24 bridges and overpasses. There are five toll booths in different sections. The total length of the created infrastructure is 52.8 km. Traffic safety is ensured by an automated traffic control system, which includes equipment for accident monitoring with radar sensors, monitoring the traffic flow and meteorological condition parameters, photo and video recording of traffic violations, video surveillance systems. To this end, 43 poles with electronic information boards and controlled road signs have been installed throughout the route. 1484 light poles were installed to illuminate the entire road at night.
