The building frame of the Arctic Center in Yakutsk is 90% ready

Construction of one of the largest cultural clusters in the Russian Far East continues in Yakutsk. The project to create an integrated complex of the State Philharmonic and the Arctic Center for Epic Literature and the Arts is being implemented by VIS Group on the principles of public-private partnership under an agreement with the Government of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). About 200 construction workers are involved in the project.

To date, 22,600 m3 of the building frame structures have been reinforced and concreted, which constitutes over 90% of the total volume. Work is underway on the assembly and installation of metal structures for the ceilings above the rehearsal and philharmonic halls. “More than 147 tons of metal structures will be installed. A unique crawler crane  (one of the two in Russia) with a lifting capacity of 280 tons was transported from Novosibirsk for their installation. The crane allows for large-scale assembly and large-block installation of metal structures,” said VIS Group project director Vladimir Nakhankov.

A significant scope of work has been launched on the installation of the façade system. More than 1000 m2 of aluminum substructures have been installed on the philharmonic block. Curvilinear stained-glass windows will be installed along the building perimeter. The total glazing area will be almost 7,500 m2. The height of the floors of the Philharmonic building and the Arctic center reaches 6 meters, thus the project provides for the use of glass up to 5.5 meters long and weighing up to 500 kg. The project will use highly selective glass that provides effective sun protection while still allowing in a lot of visible light. The special coating will reduce heat loss on the premises; the high energy efficiency of the materials used in the project is crucial in the harsh climatic conditions of Yakutia.

To continue work in winter, engineering preparations were carried out to install closed warm circuits. Currently, over 12,000 m2 are fenced off into a warm contour in the part of the building where the Philharmonic will be located. The temporary heating system has been installed. Work on installing a temporary heat main from centralized heat supply systems is nearing completion. Inside the warm circuit, work is already underway to install foam concrete partitions; over 1,400 m2 have been installed.

The cultural cluster being created on the shore of Lake Saysary is a building with a total area of almost 33,000 m2 and a height of 36.7 meters. It will house a philharmonic society, 2 theaters, and space for exhibitions and business events under one roof. The complex will be outfitted with unique equipment: a panoramic stage and orchestra pit, which can be transformed into different levels, and turntables with lifting mechanisms will allow creating different variations of stage “relief”. For the first time in the Republic of Yakutia, lighting, multimedia and acoustic equipment will allow events of any level to be held on one site.

The facility is unique both in terms of the implemented architectural solutions and the climatic conditions in which it is being built. Today, there are no similar cultural centers in the world built in permafrost conditions.
