VIS Group plans to complete construction a year earlier and open temporary traffic on the 11-kilometer section of the Mytishchi high-speed chord

The construction of 11 out of 16 kilometers of an expressway in the Moscow region is slated to be completed before the end of the 2023 construction season, which will allow the launch of temporary traffic along this section. This will happen a year earlier than the commissioning deadline for the entire chord provided for by the concession agreement. The Government of the Moscow Region requested the project investor, VIS Group, to initiate the stage-by-stage commissioning of the facility.

“The holding’s management decided to respond to the region’s proposal and ensure the early commissioning of the road section from Afanasovskoye to Pirogovskoye Highway,” said Alexander Maksakov, VIS Group’s project director, to the Vesti film crew of the Rossiya 1 TV channel, which visited the construction site today.

VIS Group has taken the necessary steps to speed up construction and adjust the schedule according to the new project deadlines. A mobile asphalt concrete plant has been put into operation, which will fully meet the needs of the construction site. The laying of the top layer of the road base from asphalt concrete has already begun of the site adjacent to the Afanasovskoye Highway. The work is carried out by asphalt-laying complexes with a 3D system to monitor all parameters online. 220,000 tons of asphalt concrete will be laid on the first delivery site, and 500,000 tons on the entire route.

“The Mytishchi high-speed chord is not only a large socially significant project, but also a technically complex infrastructure facility,” added Alexander Maksakov. “The project includes the construction of 11 bridges and overpasses, 6 transport interchanges, the reconstruction and modernization of a large number of engineering communications. The construction of three traffic interchanges, three overpasses and a bridge will be completed one year ahead of schedule.”

Currently, 8 out of 11 artificial structures envisaged by the project are under construction. The installation of metal structures on one of the largest overpasses and the bridge over the Chanka River, as well as on the overpass across Pirogovskoye Highway, has been completed. More than 150 units of special equipment and over 1,000 people are employed in the construction, and their number will continue to increase. The construction of the road base and landscaping of the embankment slopes are being completed, and noise barriers are being installed on a section of more than 6 km.

The Mytishchi High-Speed Chord is the first road project in Russia implemented under a private concession initiative by the Government of the Moscow Region through the Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure. Today it is one of the largest construction projects in the Moscow region. The four-lane road will span 16.1 km. It will take place at a distance of 4 to 8 kilometers from the Moscow Ring Road, acting as an alternate route. The estimated traffic is up to 39,000 cars per day. The new highway is designed to unburden the Yaroslavl, Dmitrovsky and Ostashkovsky highways by one-third, and the northern section of the Moscow Ring Road - by 20%. The chord will significantly improve transport accessibility for more than 850,000 residents of the Moscow region. After the traffic is launched, travel time to Moscow will be reduced by an average of 1 hour.

Thanks to the public-private partnership format, the project may be optimized in terms of both timing and the modern technologies. Under the terms of the concession agreement, a barrier toll system with five toll collection points was supposed to be installed on the route. The government of the Moscow region initiated its replacement with the Free-flow system. VIS Group is currently amending the project documentation. This initiative will allow drivers to avoid the wait at toll booths and to pay after the fact for the distance actually traveled along the highway.
